Suretank, the world's leading provider of engineered solutions to the offshore oil and gas industry, has manufactured and delivered a fleet of specialised transport containers for deployment in Antarctica.
The containers are for the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR); the Indian government-funded research institution responsible for the country’s research activities in the polar and Southern Oceans. Certified to operate in conditions down to minus 40 degrees Celsius, the containers will be used for transporting and storing essential equipment and supplies at the NCAOR research base on the Antarctic continent.
The units were mobilised by Suretank’s logistics team from Suretank's manufacturing base in Poland to Capetown, where the supply ships are provisioned for their annual run to the Antarctic base. Timing was critical as the ships have a tight schedule to run to during the short Antarctic summer; they need to penetrate as far as possible through the pack ice to their destination. From that position the re-supply operations begin, employing helicopters and ice tractor trains across the sea ice and terrain to the base. This is where the Suretank equipment comes into use.
Greg Bailey, Senior Key Account Manager Asia Pacific at Suretank explained: "These containers offer NCAOR a huge logistical advantage as they can be airlifted by helicopter from the supply ship and flown to the waiting supply trains where they are loaded for easy transport back to the base”.
For added safety, the containers have been designed so that they can be locked on to the transport trailers for travel. Once they reach the base they can be transferred into the warehouse where the specially designed end doors allow easy access to the stores during the season. The containers can also be used for other tasks during research field trips on the frozen Continent.
Greg added: "It's immensely satisfying to know that our equipment is being used very successfully in one of the most hostile environments in the world. It is testament to our engineering team that we can produce equipment of this calibre."
Suretank also supplies helifuel transport tanks to NCAOR which are used regularly in all aspects of their operations in the Antarctic.
Dr. Shailendra Saini from NCAOR added: "Yet again we have been very impressed with the quality of Suretank's equipment and their ability to get the equipment delivered on time. Weather conditions in the South Pole are extremely harsh and can change very rapidly, therefore equipment has to be robust enough to withstand the extreme conditions."
Suretank is the world’s largest manufacturer of tanks and cargo-carrying units for the offshore oil and gas industry and all of its products are designed produced and certified to the most rigorous of offshore standards.
Suretank products are in use in every region of the world and our product range includes chemical and acid tanks, helifuel tanks, offshore containers, baskets, mudskips and cryogenic tanks.
