Bergen Goes Green

Bergen Goes Green

On the lead up to St Patrick’s day I had the pleasure of meeting Ireland’s new Ambassador to Norway, Karl Gardner, who paid his first visit to Bergen.
The visit coincided with Bergen Irish Seactain na Gaelige (Irish Language Week) and the greening of the town’s Ulriken TV mast.  The greening of Ulriken is part of Ireland’s unique Global Greening initiative which over the last seven years has seen some of the world’s most famous sites go green to mark St Patrick’s Day.

The Coliseum in Rome, the Sacré Cœur Basilica in Paris, the Great Wall of China, Niagara Falls, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the Holmkollen Ski Jump and the Fram Polar Ship in Oslo have all taken part in Greenings in previous years.  It was really great that Bergen could join the party this year.

I asked Karl the reason behind the Global Greening initiative.  He informed me that it was simply about starting a conversation, and getting people interested in Ireland. Hopefully this would encourage them to visit Ireland or possibly do business with Ireland.  Most importantly he said like all good conversations, they go both ways.  He hoped that places in Norway and all the other places that are involved in this Global Greening initiative will also be visited by the people of Ireland.    I went away from watching the Ulrikken Mast being lit up in the dark wintery sky of Bergen, having been treated to a lovely dinner and drinks, thinking that is exactly the way most good business starts, a simple conversation, with the mutual goal of both parties benefiting.

Other Irish people working within Norway and members of the Bergen Irish Society. Business relationships in Norway, like in many other countries have been fundamental in the day to day running of Suretank, and have assisted in providing employment over the last 20 years to Suretank’s team all over the world, for which we are all grateful.
